Box Braids Maintenance and Upkeep

I totally forgot how to take care of these things! It has been about ten years since I got any sort of box or individual braids and I was wracking my brain how I took care of them when I was swimming everyday during the summer - then it occurred to me I probably wasn't doing much in the hair care department. Instead of using the go-to BB African Royale BRX Braid and Extensions Sheen Spray which don't get me wrong, I loved back in the day (just not a fan of those PEGs and other chemicals now). I was trying to find or re-create something similar to this spray that was light enough to not leave residue on braids, give it a non-artificial shine and most importantly moisturize the hair and scalp - preventing dandruff. For the past two weeks I have been using my own home remedy moisturizer spray with aloe vera juice and so far so good even though it has the potential to flake up and leave slight residue (nothing noticeable to the naked eye). I think I will change out the dollop of moisturizer that I normally mix in the bottle for another one and see how that works.

I usually seal in the moisturizer with Carol's Daughter Tui Jojoba and Shea Butter Hair Sheen that gives the braids some shine and keeps my scalp moisturized. I thought I could do this routine every other day but my hair is naturally dry so I have been doing it every morning.

In terms of my washing schedule I have resorted to try to do it every two weeks given that I am working out moderately 3-4 times a week, but now on the eve of my hair wash I think I need to be doing it every 1.5 weeks.

In terms of styling, I thought I had it in the bag! There are so many YouTube videos showcasing a multitude of box braids styles including the coveted top-knot bun! You wanna know what's funny, I am not sure if its because my hair is weak, my scalp is tenderheaded, or that my braids are just still in too tight but I cannot make a top knot bun yet and I am really sad about it. In the meantime, I have done a side braid which has to be done properly otherwise it will unravel and become a blob. I also tend to go to the default four braids twisted around the head type look because it becomes greatly annoying when the braids keep swinging into your line of sight from brushing your teeth to writing this blog post on a computer!
